Are there scholarships for teachers?

QUESTION: I am a high school English teacher who wants to go back to school to pursue a Master's degree in either English or Educational Administration, but I am determined never to pay tuition again! I had a 3.9 GPA in college and have teaching experience. Is there scholarship money out there for me? Signed, From Teacher to Student

Dear From Teacher to Student: The Inspired Teacher Scholarships program provides $500 awards for teachers who support visual learning and integrate technology in the classroom. Visit www.inspiration.com for more details.

If you serve in a low-income or subject matter shortage areas, you may be able to cancel or defer your student loans. Get more information on the Department of Education's Web site at: www.ed.gov or call (800) 4-FED-AID

States often offer scholarships as well to support teaching in their states. You can find your state's higher education agency at the Department of Education's Web site as well at www.ed.gov.

As an experienced teacher, you have your teaching certificate, but a program for those without a certificate is the NYC Teaching Fellows, www.nycteachingfellows.org. This program allows you to teach in New York, earning a teacher's salary and benefits while simultaneously earning a Master's degree in education that is paid for. Check if your state offers a similar program.
