How to Get Into & Pay for College

Should I consider playing athletics in college?

QUESTION: I know that there are financial aid reasons to play athletics in college, but I can probably win academic scholarships. So besides the financial reasons, why should I play athletics in college? I'm worried about how much time it will take. Signed, Considering

Dear Considering: College athletes have reported that during interviews, employers are more interested in their college athletic experiences than they are in their classroom endeavors. Why? Because college athletics provides an environment that can set the future business leaders, educators, medical and law professionals for success above and beyond non-athletes. College athletics demands the development of characteristics that employers find endearing and necessary for success in the real-world.

College athletics provides the student-athlete with building such characteristics as:
  • Strong work ethic

  • Dedication

  • Self-sacrifice

  • Determination

  • Self-motivation/self-starter

  • Drive and ambition

  • Confidence

  • Time-management skills

  • Team work

  • Leadership

  • And the overall ability to succeed in all areas of life

With college athletes graduating at higher percentages than the general population (77% to 61%) and former college athletes earning almost 10% greater salaries than non-athletes once in adult life, why would high school athletes not want to continue in college?
